8 Safety Tips To Learn Before You Start Go-Karting

March 18, 2025

Are you gearing up for your first go-karting adventure? That’s great! Before you hit the track, it’s important to learn about how to stay safe while behind the wheel of a kart. Go-karting may seem simple, but it requires preparation and awareness, especially when you’re new to this activity.

We’ve compiled eight safety tips to learn before you start go-karting that’ll keep you in full control during your first outing. Knowing this information in advance can mean the difference between an epic thrill and a day you’d rather forget.

Wear the Right Clothing

Before heading to the track, you should dress for the occasion. What does that mean? Wear lightweight, comfortable clothes that won’t restrict your movement, including long pants and fitted shirts. If you have access to one, a racing suit that goes over your clothes will be ideal.

Loose clothing is a huge no-no because it might get caught in the kart’s wheels or engine components, which can lead to a variety of problems. Even an oversized hoodie with dangling drawstrings can be problematic.

Finally, don’t forget close-toed shoes! Slip-ons or sandals are not ideal for pressing the pedals. Sneakers are your best bet for a safe and comfortable ride.

Tie Back Long Hair

Outside of clothing, you’ll need to take care of your hair. If you have short hair, you won’t have anything to worry about, but if it’s long enough to touch your shoulders, you’ll want to keep it tucked away. Flowing locks coming out of your helmet may look cool, but they can cause a lot of trouble. It could snag on parts of the kart or obscure your vision while driving.

Put your hair in a tight ponytail, bun, or braid and tuck those stray strands behind your ears. If you’re at a professional track, they may provide hair nets or caps you can wear under the helmet to keep everything in place. You’ll want to focus on the road, not pulling hair out of your face!

Wear Safety Gear

Speaking of helmets, you can’t forget about safety gear. In fact, it’s non-negotiable. Whether you’re racing at high speeds or just enjoying a casual spin, safety gear is typically required by the go-kart track you’re attending. Fortunately, though, they will provide this gear for you.

If they offer helmets, gloves, or racing suits, you shouldn’t shy away from any of them, as they can all keep you safe while on the track. Helmets are obviously ideal for protecting your head, while gloves can improve your grip on the steering wheel, especially during long sessions. Other than protecting your clothes, a protective suit can shield you from scrapes if you encounter an unfortunate mishap. Just make sure it all fits properly and that you’ve inspected it to ensure there aren’t any cracks or rips before getting behind the wheel.

Inspect the Vehicle

Never assume that every go-kart is track-ready. While the race track employees have made sure your kart is good to go, minor details might get overlooked. Taking a few seconds to inspect your kart before getting behind the wheel is a good idea.

During your quick inspection, look for wear and tear around the tires and brakes. Are the tires underinflated? Does the kart look worn out? These issues might cause trouble during your run. Also, give the steering wheel a quick test to confirm it handles smoothly.

A basic inspection for irregularities helps you confirm that nothing will surprise you mid-race. If something doesn’t seem right about the vehicle, notify staff immediately for help.

Learn All the Kart Controls

Without a doubt, you have to understand the go-kart’s controls before hitting the track. Ask the instructor or staff to walk you through operating a go-kart. Familiarize yourself with how the pedals function, and practice sitting in the kart to find a position that’s comfortable for you.

Pay extra attention to the braking system. Braking in a go-kart isn’t the same as braking in a real car. Kart brakes are sensitive, so practice controlled movements to avoid sudden stops that might cause you to lose control or spin out. Taking five minutes to review controls before your first lap can boost both your confidence and safety on the course.

Never Bump Into Other Drivers

Racing may be competitive, but go-karting is not like bumper cars! One of the golden rules for beginners is to avoid intentionally bumping into other drivers. Collisions can not only damage your kart but also lead to serious injuries for you and the other driver.

While some collisions are unavoidable, maintaining a safe distance between your kart and others on the track will make you far less likely to run into anyone. You’ll have more time to brake, steer, or react to sudden movements of fellow racers. Go-karting is as much about control as it is about speed. Focus on keeping your path clear and finding the shortest course to the finish line.

Don’t Brake Too Hard

Beginners may make the mistake of slamming on the brakes, especially when taking sharp corners. Sudden braking not only disrupts your momentum but can also cause the kart to skid, slide, or spin out or lead to accidents.

Aim for gradual and consistent braking. When approaching a corner, reduce your speed by taking your foot off the accelerator, then apply gentle pressure to the brake. This allows for smoother transitions and stops you from losing control. If you’re worried about timing, you can ask instructors for tips on handling while braking. Use these resources to fine-tune your movements!

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Situational awareness is key when you’re zipping around the track. Always keep your eyes on the road ahead, and frequently glance around to know where the other drivers are. Whether it’s someone attempting to pass or a slower driver creating a bottleneck, understanding your surroundings allows you to adapt quickly.

Also, avoid distractions, such as looking behind you often or focusing too much on what others are doing. Stay relaxed, trust your reflexes, and focus on maintaining your lane and speed. Some tracks have spotters or staff directing traffic along tricky spots. Keep an eye out for their signals to follow the rules and avoid accidents.
