Graduation from high school or college is a milestone you should be proud of. You have worked hard for years, and by the end of your scholastic journey, you’re ready to take the world by storm. You possess all the tools you need to be a successful, high-functioning adult: You’re well-versed in the Pythagorean theorem. You can identify the components of the plant cell. You can identify conjunctions and independent clauses – in Italian, nonetheless. The world is a big, complex place and you’re psyched that your years of education have completely prepared you to kill it in the real world. Until you realize they really haven’t.
How to write a check.
You may have received checks in your lifetime – from your grandparents on your birthday perhaps. You may have seen people writing them – like the old lady in front of you in the grocery store checkout line. Have you ever written one? Would you know how? Realistically, you can send checks through your online banking, but, again, do you know how?
How to file your taxes.
In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” Once you get a job, you’ll need to file taxes just like the rest of us. Do you have a clue about how to do that? No? You’ll need to learn or pay someone to do them for you.
How to get what you want.
As a kid, you could beg, pester, throw a tantrum – or be super sweet and lovable to get what you wanted. In the real world, you’ll find yourself needing to negotiate to get what you want. Negotiation is a skill. Did you learn it in school?

Without a solid credit history and good credit score, you’ll find it hard to get approved to rent an apartment, loan money to buy a car, or secure a credit card. STUDENT LOANS! Anyone? How much do you know about your credit score? Have you already messed up your credit score?

You’re on a cross-country road trip and your tire blows out in the middle of nowhere. You’ve got a spare in the trunk, but do you have any clue what to do with it? If not, find someone to teach you. Now. YouTube it, if you have to.

Your toilet is clogged up. Your shower won’t stop dripping. You’ve turned on the hairdryer and the vacuum at the same time and tripped a breaker. No more parents to the rescue… When you live on your own, you’re the point person for the household problems that can and will happen. Are you ready?

You’ve met a special someone and want to impress him or her with a home-cooked meal. Beyond boiling water or heating something up in the microwave, do you know enough cooking basics to make an entire meal? Would you make your grandma proud?
